a Naked Icon
If there's any part on being a "UPean", that's often taken for granted is that
naked figure of the beloved Oblation. A lot don't even know much about him at all.
Staring this issue, we'll be featuring trivia on the Oblation and maybe post some
photos of the oblation run, if and when, the web nanny's archive files will permit ;) .
(I hear some say: that's something to look forward to :D)
Urban legend has it that the Oblation was modeled after FPJ's late father, Fernando Poe Sr. by the
sculptor Guillermo Tolentino. The senior Poe is the lead in the 40's movie Zamboanga
and was married to an alumnae of UP Diliman, Bessie Kelly.
Blog
Sigma Alpha Nu's space in the web started in March 22, 1999 with Kookie Guzman 96-B
Manila, taking the initiative to
start a "sigma_alpha_nu" email group at the defunct Egroups.com.
It has been four years and the online groups of Nuans have fully utilized all the
resources the cyberspace can offer, not only to bridge distances, but in keeping aflame the
sorority's passions.
This 2004, what good will our virtual tryst offer to our country already at the edge of
an economic collapse?
Are we up to the formidable task of making Philippines,
a country where FREEDOM & DEMOCRACY is VALUED and the RULE OF LAW UPHELD?
Too tall an order to undertake,
when the culture we have grown to know is accustomed to just shrug off,
shut up or turn a blind eye to whatever
foulness that come up to our faces.
As long as we are in our comfort zones then damn the others.
The apathy that has polluted and in effect relegated our system has grown
seriously malignant.
Inspite of all the hoopla on the wannabe presidentibles, a majority of the electorate chose to disfranchise.
Low turn out in the recent voter's registration, both locally and in the Oversees Absentee
Voting (OAV) posts, manifests not only lack of earnestness on the government's part but
a boomimg statement on the loss of confidence for the system.
A number of the better educated
voted with their feet. Suddenly, exclusive subdivisions, Greenbelt 3 and Libis
don't appeal anymore, the career shock of Canada enticed.
For a Nuan, no matter where in the globe she maybe, it is painful to just sit back and watch her mother country
decay. A click of a tongue or a knot in her brow will not shake the need TO DO
SOMETHING! The SAN initiation taught us not just to be a part of a sorority upholding
our lofty principles of Truth, Reason and Justice but to take initiative in whatever endeavour which will
promote the goals of social awareness, nationalism, leadership, academic excellence
and uplift of women. The Nuan in us, stirs.
2004 is a crucial year for the Philippines. The Sigma Alpha Nu webby
will take the role as a portal for web parliamentarians. For the first half of the year,
features relevant on educating the electorate will be most welcome and will take centerstage.
Foremost, the site wishes to inspire our residents, the youth in general.
The youth maybe the only hope the nation has. We have quite a crop of aggressive young
minds around, and are the easiest to mobilize in defense of current issues.
Inculcate visions of true reform among them and a better Philippines
might just come forth.
Myopically, the maintenance of OFW supply to the international employent
market and eventual benefactors of dollar remittances are the surest roles
our youth will undertake for our country.
We have around 80M pinoys, almost half of this number are qualified voters aged 18-21.
Come 2004, this confidence for the youth will be put to the test.

Elections 2004
"Bad politicians are elected by good citizens who do not vote"
-TALSIK

Click to KNOW THE CANDIDATES
Abalos of COMELEC:
"the issue of whether the May polls would be fully automated, manual, or
a hybrid of the two depended on the Supreme Court."
WE say: This is an OUTRAGE!
Is this another attempt to malign the Vox populi?

The automated counting machine (ACM)
will be playing a big part in the
election results for the May 10, 2004 elections.
It is a part of a new system for counting votes and canvassing.
Votes are cast by shading the ovals opposite the names of the candidate of your
choice in the ballots. There will be no more writing of names of candidates. It will be much
like marking ovals corresponding to your answer on the NSAT/NCEE answer sheet.
Ballots will not be counted at the precinct anymore by the teachers. These will
be counted at a centralized counting center by an ACM. The fake ballots
done through ballot switching can be detected by the ACM as well. Vote
padding/shaving will be eradicated since election results will be
immediately available on-site at the centralized counting
center, and with the dominant majority and minority political parties, including
the accredited citizen’s arm still being provided copies of the results, the
paper trail is long and virtually everywhere. Any deviation from the true count,
if any, will easily be traceable.

SAN Diliman's biggest challenge
Sheng Agustin 96-B Diliman
Last December 13 the sisters had an activity after a long slumber.
It was at the community fair sponsored by the University Student Council.
Even if only a handful of sisters were there, the event was successful.
It was a fulfillment to make the kids (and their parents!) happy.
They enjoyed it as much as we did.
The sisters were all happy to note, that no matter how simple the activity
was, the sorority is back in circulation in the Diliman campus.
The chapter is taking it one step at a time.
We are not aspiring for big shot projects yet.
Key factor is the residents' very limited resources (esp. manpower and finance!)
The initial goal is to reestablish the sorority within the campus for the coming year
even through
simple projects and hopefully, make it big on our silver anniv!!!
To the sisses who are working in companies like Avon, L'oreal, or Sara Lee,
please help us to get them as sponsors for the March concert and Anniv.
Any help that you could extend shall forever be remembered.

First Muslim woman for a Nobel award
Iran's Shirin Ebadi is the first Muslim woman to win the Nobel Peace prize, collecting a
gold medal and the $1.4 million award from the head of the Norwegian Nobel
Committee at Oslo City Hall.
Ebadi is Iran’s first woman judge before the 1979 Islamic revolution.
A vocal campaigner for women’s and children’s rights, The 56 year old awardee
has acted as defence lawyer for a wide range of political activists, earning a reputation for
taking on cases others were too afraid to touch.
She argued passionately that Sharia law could be adapted to modern times
without undermining Islam.
“There is no contradiction between Islam
and human rights,” she said. “If a country abuses human rights in the name of
Islam then it is not the fault of Islam.
Ebadi found herself on the wrong
side of the law in 2000, when she was accused of disseminating a
politically-explosive videotape of a violent Islamic vigilante group member who
confessed to links with conservative politicians in Iran.
That incident
landed Ebadi in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison where scores of political
dissidents are held. She was also banned from practicing law for five
years.
In solitary confinement, she wrote: Angrily I am trying to write
on the cement wall with the bottom of my spoon that we are born to suffer
because we are born in the Third World. Time and place are imposed upon us. So
let’s be patient as there is no other choice.
Among her books translated
into English are ‘The Rights of the Child’. on children’s rights in Iran and
‘History and Documentation of Human Rights in Iran.’ She is also a co-editor of
the forthcoming book ‘Democracy, Human Rights and Islam in Modern Iran’.
Women all over should claim Ebadi's laureate as their own victory.
It should be a precedent and a wake up call that its is high time to do away with
misdirected prejudices.
This year's Nobel Peace Prize winner says the September 11 attacks have been
used as an excuse to violate international law and human rights.
"Regulations restricting human rights and basic freedoms ... have been justified
and given legitimacy under the cloak of the war on terrorism," she said.
Ebadi also slammed Washington for ignoring U.N. resolutions in the Middle East
while using them as a pretext for launching a war in Iraq.
"Why is it
that in the past 35 years, dozens of U.N. resolutions concerning the occupation
of the Palestinian territories by the state of Israel have not been implemented
properly?" she asked.
"Yet, in the past 12 years, the state and people
of Iraq, once on the recommendation of the Security Council, and the second time
in spite of U.N. Security Council opposition, were subjected to attack, military
assault, economic sanctions, and ultimately, military occupation?"
The last women to win the prize were Jody Williams, the coordinator of the
International Campaign to Ban Landmines in 1997, Guatemalan human rights leader
Rigoberta Menchu in 1992 and Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in 1991.

Still counting...
From the Geocities home back in 2001, to our present Freeservers dot 8k.com
domain, the Sigma Alpha Nu website has attracted 6,790 unique visitors. Averaging with
157 visitors a month. This year, the web nanny aims to generate more visitors by continuously
updating and upgrading the webby. The SAN website has been the sorority's full function
cybervenue for meetings, logbook entries, virtual BB, activity updates and not to forget, for tsika.
More hits means more exposure, which could eventually
spell ad placements to finally sponsor the sorority's very own www.sigmaalphanu.org.
Peyups.com, Tsinoy.com and WhozOnTop had been witness to the site's
popularity.
2003 saw a rise in SAN's yahoogroup membership courtesy of the NUsroom's "invite box"
and through logbook posts. In the same year, two new pages had been added to our webhome-CARPE DIEM,
showcasing the talents of our sisters and visitors; and PROFILES, which features
distinguished alumni.
January 22,2004 is the first day in the Year of the Monkey.
The yang wood Monkey is a symbol of revolution, movement and changes.
This new year, Sigma Alpha Nu aims for betterment, work with whatever
resources we have to initialize transformation. The SAN webby
hopes to make a big presence in the web by educating its visitors and most
of all providing inspiration to NUans all over. The Sigma Alpha Nu flame
beckons.
Thank you sisters, contributors, friends and supporters. Let us continue to keep
the flame aglow.
